Derek Vance is Professor of Geochemistry in the Department of Earth Science at ETH Zürich. In the past he has worked on mantle geochemistry and in has used geochronology and metamorphic petrology to understand but mountain belts such as the Alps and Himalaya. Halfway through is career, however, his research interests transitioned into a more watery realm. For the past 10-15 years they have focussed around the use of geochemistry, particularly isotope geochemistry, to understand the surface Earth, its modern state and how it got there through Earth history. Recently this has included participation in the GEOTRACES programme, with the amazing opportunities this has presented to obtain samples of the modern oceans for new stable metal isotope systems such as Zn, Cu, Ni, Fe, Cd and Mo. In addition to this GEOTRACES work, Derek and his group seek to understand the global cycles of these elements through investigations of the inputs to the dissolved pool of the oceans, including large rivers like the Amazon, and outputs to various kinds of sediments. An important long-term objective is to use this effort targeted at understanding these modern budgets to use the same tools to understand the chemical evolution of the oceans in the past.
